Crazy 8’s

Purse Patterns

By Stephen K. Hartley

These felted purses are made by knitting intertwined pieces and stitching them together to form an 8-like shape.  Patterns for both the 8 of Squares and 8 of Circles are included, as well as gusset and no-gusset finishing choices.

SIZE/MEASUREMENTS

Your yarn/needle choices will determine the size of your purses.  The square one I made with worsted weight angora/wool on size 7 needles measures 7" X 9".  The circular one is made of bulky alpaca/wool on size 13 needles and measures 11" X 15".

MATERIALS

Yarn - Any weight and fiber combination is fine.  If you want to felt the purse, be sure to use a yarn that will felt.  You will need two different colors for striping.  About 100 yards of each color will be needed.  Allow for more if you plan to finish with a gusset.  Here is what I used.

            8 of Squares with gusset-

                        1 Classic Elite Lush Angora (50%) / Wool (50%) #4475 gray, 50 grams - 124 yards

                        1 Classic Elite Lush Angora (50%) / Wool (50%) #4419 pink, 50 grams - 124 yards

            8 of Circles without gusset-

                        2 Blue Sky Bulky Hand Dyes Alpaca (50%) / Wool (50%) #1014 purple, 100 grams - 45 yards

                        2 Blue Sky Bulky Hand Dyes Alpaca (50%) / Wool (50%) #1017 green, 100 grams - 45 yards

Needles - Whatever size circular needed to get the gauge recommended on the label, a little tighter if you don't plan to felt.  I used 8 inch-size 7 on the 8 of Squares and 12 inch-size 13 on the 8 of Circles.

Notions - Tapestry needle, 8 stitch markers, Size G or K crochet hook (optional), fasteners/handles (optional - you can use snaps, buttons, belts or any like accessories you wish, or even knit or crochet a handle or fastener)
